I was originally going to just post this on my least worst site, LinkedIn. And then I woke up. Web 2.0, dummy. It’s all connected. If you put it here, said the voice, it will get there and a whole lot of other places. Maybe well have an Alice’s Restaurant movement.
So here goes. Feel free to sing along. 🆗
Can We Talk?
From Day 1 some 5 years ago, when I first encountered LinkedIn I was extremely not impressed. There must be a better mousetrap. Well, 5 years later, I’m still looking, and scratching my head in bewilderment as to why not.
I won’t go into the weeds that much, but suffice to say, I still don’t get it. Old questions still linger, like:
🔹What is the goal? Or is that no longer important. Is it just a more “sophisticated” version of Facebook?
🔹I see a pattern that goes like this – grab a link found while surfing, throw it out there, maybe with a comment, and 2 weeks later, you have connection request invitations piled up.
🔹 Why is it that gray showed figures listed as “an anonymous user” or other such “ghosts” can trawl and view your profile? Spooky.
🔹Who decided that after 500 connections you get a + sign after the 500? Is that a goal you would want to pass along as valuable advice to your children? Lofty?
🔹Despite writing to the executive leadership for five years, the internal mail system still has no spellchecker. Why bother, I guess. Shameful.
I’ll stop here, find a few more links and post. The goal? Look busy, I guess.
If anyone has any metric or analytics that can demonstrate value using multivariable analysis, please pass me the URL.
In the meantime I’m content in just knowing my credit card gets used every month so I can continue to rack up those points. Anyone remember the Tubes?
Oh, right, you can find me at http://www.linkedin/in/mgcybersme (when I grow up I’ll use the badge, which would actually make a nice lapel pin”.
